Аннотация

This article analyzes the impact of bilingualism on mental development, social adaptation and communicative potential in children based on scientific sources. Research shows that bilingual children have higher levels of attention, problem-solving skills, and cultural adaptation. The article highlights the positive and negative aspects of bilingualism based on the work of scholars such as Ellen Bialystok (2001), François Grosjean (2010) and Jim Kummins (1984). Scientifically based recommendations on bilingual education are also given to parents and pedagogues. Key words: bilingualism, bilingual education, cognitive development, social adaptation, code-switching, neuropsychology, communication. In recent years, the issue of bilingualism, i.e., the active acquisition of two languages, has become one of the topical issues on a global scale. Many scientists are studying the positive and negative consequences of this situation, especially in children. In her book Bilingualism in Development: Language, Literacy, and Cognition (2001), psycholinguist Ellen Bialystok notes that bilingual children have stronger executive functions: “Children who grow up in bilingual environments are better at managing their attention, solving problems, and managing uncertainty.” [1] This idea has been confirmed by many subsequent studies. Therefore, bilingualism not only increases language knowledge, but also serves the development of thinking. François Grosjean (2010) in his work “Bilingual: Life and Reality” shows bilingualism as a vital necessity and a factor that positively affects human thinking. [2] In this article, the potential of bilingual education is analyzed in depth based on such scientific sources. This article is written in a descriptive-analytical style and relies mainly on advanced academic sources and the latest scientific research. The following main scientific literature was analyzed: Bialystok, E. (2001). Bilingualism in Development: Language, Literacy and Cognition, Cambridge University Press. Grosjean, F. (2010). Bilingual: Life and Reality, Harvard University Press. Cummins, J. (1984). Bilingualism and Special Education: Issues in Assessment and Pedagogy, Multilingual Matters. ~ 89 ~ “Global lingvistika: yangi yondashuvlar va tadqiqotlar” mavzusidagi xalqaro ilmiy-amaliy anjuman The analysis also took into account questionnaires conducted with parents and practical observations conducted in primary schools. Also, articles in the field of neurolinguistics analyzed how the brain responds to a bilingual environment. Studies show that bilingual children have several positive outcomes: 3. 1. Cognitive development Bilingual children excel in working memory, selective attention, and problem solving (Bialystok, 2001). “Executive function” activities in the brain develop strongly (Barac & Bialystok, 2012). [3] 3.2. Social adjustment and cultural awareness Bilingual children adapt more quickly to different cultural environments. They are free to communicate with representatives of different nationalities. 3.3. Problems in language development In some cases, the problem of “code-switching” (language exchange) is observed, but this is not a negative condition, but is evaluated as a sign of active language use (Grosjean, 2010). Language delay occurs only in cases of incorrect approach, suppression of one language. The main theories of bilingualism—Jim Cummins’ Interdependence Hypothesis and Threshold Theory (Cummins, 1984)—affirm the mutually reinforcing role of two languages. That is, if the first language is strong, the second language will also develop successfully. [4] At the same time, educators and parents should consider the following situations: Paying equal attention to both languages; Harmonization of two languages in the educational and cultural environment; Learning a language with encouragement, not pressure. Experiments show that children who are fluent in two languages will have more opportunities in the future: highly qualified professions, work in an international environment and superiority in academic potential. Bilingualism is not only a language, but also a means of thinking, personal development and cultural advancement. With the right approach and a cheerful learning environment, a child will develop not only intellectually, but also socially and culturally. This article can be an important theoretical basis and practical guide for parents, educational institutions and language policy specialists who want to start bilingual education.
