Amir Temur's LifeandFamily Background Amir Temur , also known as Tamerlane, was born on April 9, 1336, in Hoja Ilgar, a village near Kesh (modern-day Shahrisabz, Uzbekistan). He belonged to the Barlas tribe, a Mongol- Turkic ethnic group that had settled in Central Asia. His father, Taraghay Bahadur, was a respected noble and local leader, while his mother, Tekina Khatun, played an influential role in his upbringing. From a young age, Temur was trained in military strategy, leadership, and governance. He studied Islamic principles, Persian literature, and the art of war, gaining experience in both political and battlefield tactics. At the age of27,during a skirmishwith a rival tribe, Temur sustained severe injuries to his right leg and arm, leaving him partially disabled. This injury led to the nickname “Temur the Lame”, which later became “Tamerlane” in European sources. Ascension to Power In the mid-14th century, political turmoil gripped Central Asia. In the 1360s, Amir Temur formed alliances with local leaders and began his quest for dominance. Initially employed by the Mongols, subsequently hefounded independent authority. In 1370, havingconquered Samarkand, he declared himself the ruler of Mawarannahr. Amir Temur’s rise to power was a strategic process that involved alliances, military conquests, and political maneuvering. Early Struggles and Alliances (1350s-1360s) Between 1350 and 1360, Amir Temur's emergence onto the political stage began with severe trials and the formation of key alliances. This was due to the collapse of the Chagatai Khanate and the general instability in the region of Mawarannahr at the time. In his youth, Temur served various tribal leaders and also fought for territorial dominance. One of the significant alliances was formed around 1356, when Temur allied with a powerful amir — Amir Husayn, the grandson of Qazan Khan. Together, they acted against rivals in the struggle for control over Mawarannahr. Temur further strengthened this alliance by marrying Amir Husayn’s sister too. This period laid the foundation for Temur’s entry into politics and his eventual rise to independent power andrule. Service under Tughlugh Timur(1360-1361): In the years 1360–1361, the period of political instability in Mawarannahr continued. The Chagatai Ulus had weakened, and many local amirs were competing for independent power. This situation created a favorable opportunity for the Mongol ruler Tughlugh Temur Khan from Eastern Turkestan to attempt to restore control over Mawarannahr. As a result, in 1360, Tughlugh Temur Khan launched a campaign from the Ili Valley (Eastern Turkestan) into Mawarannahr. He also declared himself the only legitimate khan of the Chagatai Ulus. In this situation, Amir Temur and Amir Husayn did not directly resist him. Instead, they appeared to submit temporarily—this was a calculated political tactic. In 1361, Ilyas Khoja, the son of Tughlugh Temur, was appointed as deputy (naib) of Mawarannahr. This development deeply concerned Temur and Husayn, as they feared losing their independence. Therefore, they decided to take action against the Mongols. Temur and Husayn joined forces and launched military operations against the troops of Ilyas Khoja. Temur displayed his military brilliance, using highly mobile cavalry units to exhaust enemy forces. He successfully pushed back Mongol troops through several clashes around
