Effective assessment of reading skills enables educators to identify students’ reading levels, track progress, and make informed instructional decisions. With growing attention to inclusive education and digital learning, the need for refined assessment strategies has become more critical than ever. Reading serves as a fundamental skill for learning in all academic disciplines. From tackling mathematical equations to grasping scientific principles and interpreting historical developments, students must possess strong reading abilities to effectively access and understand content. Through reading, learners encounter a wide range of vocabulary, grammatical patterns, and sentence structures. This exposure enhances their ability to communicate clearly in both spoken and written forms, contributing to the development of both native and foreign language proficiency. [[1, p. 112-128] Moreover, reading keeps individuals up to date with current events, political https://inlibrary.uz 1 8 4 61-son_4-to’plam_May-2025 ISSN:3030- 3 6 1 3 T A D Q I Q O T L A R jahon ilmiy – metodik jurnali developments, and international affairs. This awareness supports critical thinking, informed decision-making, and active participation in civic life. To effectively evaluate reading abilities, it is essential to recognize the fundamental elements that make up reading proficiency. These components include phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, reading fluency, and comprehension. Phonemic awareness is the skill of identifying and manipulating the distinct sounds within spoken words—a foundational ability for reading acquisition. Phonics focuses on understanding the connections between letters and their associated sounds. Vocabulary involves the extent of word knowledge a learner has developed. Fluency refers to the capacity to read smoothly, accurately, and with proper intonation. Comprehension, the ultimate objective of reading, entails grasping, analyzing, and interacting with the text's meaning. A thorough reading assessment must take all of these aspects into account, as they are closely interlinked. There are various methods used to assess reading, each tailored to different educational purposes and situations. [2, p. 63-75] Formative assessment is used throughout the learning process to inform and improve instruction. Examples include teacher notes, reading logs, oral readings, short quizzes, and classroom conversations. These assessments offer immediate insights that help both teachers and students refine learning strategies as they go. Summative assessment, in contrast, is typically conducted at the conclusion of a unit or academic term to measure overall learning outcomes. This may include standardized tests, final assessments, or reading comprehension exercises, and is often used to assign grades or evaluate progress on a broader scale. Diagnostic assessments are specifically designed to pinpoint individual student challenges, such as issues with decoding, fluency, or understanding. These targeted evaluations are critical for developing personalized support and intervention plans. [3, p. 45-67] Informal assessment methods allow educators to monitor reading development in more relaxed, everyday classroom settings. Tools such as running records, miscue analysis, fluency observations, and student retellings provide useful feedback on reading strategies and behaviors. With the rise of digital education, technology-based assessments have become more prevalent. Platforms like ReadTheory and Raz-Kids, as well as computer-adaptive testing systems, offer quick feedback and tailor learning experiences to individual needs. These tools also collect performance data that can help teachers track and analyze student progress over time. [4,p.112-128] To ensure assessments are effective, educators should implement several key best practices. One of the most important strategies is to adopt a balanced approach that includes both formal and informal assessments. This helps create a well-rounded understandi
