Аннотация

Antiviral drugs play a critical role in managing viral infections, significantly improving patient outcomes and quality of life. This article explores the development, mechanisms of action, and modern types of antiviral drugs. It reviews their use in treating common viral diseases, such as influenza, HIV, hepatitis, and COVID-19, and highlights the challenges associated with resistance, safety, and the development of new antiviral agents. The emergence of novel therapies, including direct-acting antivirals (DAAs), biologics, and immune modulators, is transforming thelandscape ofantiviral treatment. Unlike bacterial infections, viruses cannot be treated with antibiotics, necessitating the development of specialized antiviral medications. Over the past few decades, the field of antiviral therapy has evolved significantly, driven by advancements in biotechnology, molecular biology, and pharmacology. The growing need for effective antiviral drugs has led to the development of a wide range of therapies aimed at combating various viral infections, from common illnesses like theflu to life-threatening conditions such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and COVID-19. Antiviral drugs are designed to target specific stages of the viral lifecycle, aiming to inhibit the virus's ability to replicate, enter host cells, or interfere with the host's immune defenses. Unlike broad-spectrum antibiotics, which can kill or inhibit a wide range of bacteria, antiviral drugs are typically tailored to act on specific viruses, making their design more complex. The action of these drugs varies significantly, depending on their mechanism of action, which can include preventing viral attachment to host cells, inhibiting viral enzymes crucial for replication, or boosting the host’s immune response to fight off the infection. The importance of antiviral drugs cannot be overstated. For diseases like HIV and hepatitis, the development of effective antiviral treatments has turned what were once fatal diseases into manageable chronic conditions. Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) for HIV and Direct-Acting Antivirals (DAAs) for hepatitis C have made it possible for many individuals to lead relatively normal lives, with extended life expectancy and improved quality of life. In addition, antiviral drugs have been crucial in controlling seasonal flu outbreaks and have become central in the fight against emerging viral infections, such as COVID-19. However, the landscape of antiviral drug development is not without challenges. The emergence of drug resistance, especially with the long-term use of certain antiviral agents, presents a significant hurdle. Resistance can occur when viruses mutate and become less susceptible to existing treatments, which makes it harder to manage infections. For example, resistance to antiretroviral drugs in HIV-infected individuals and to antiviral drugs like oseltamivir (Tamiflu) for influenza has become a growing concern. This emphasizes the need for continual innovation in the development of new antiviral agents, as well as improved strategies for drug delivery, monitoring, and resistance prevention. www.wordlyknowledge.uz ILMIYMETODIK JURNAL JOURNAL OFIQRO –ЖУРНАЛ ИҚРО –IQRO JURNALI –volume 15,issue01,2025 ISSN:2181-4341, IMPACT FACTOR( RESEARCH BIB )–7,245,SJIF–5,431 Moreover, the high cost of many antiviral drugs, coupled with the global disparity in access to these medications, poses a challenge for equitable healthcare. While high-income countries benefit from a wide array of antiviral options, low- and middle-income countries often face difficulties in accessing the latest therapies, which could exacerbate the global burden of viral infections. Recent advancements have led to the emergence of immune modulators, monoclonal antibodies, and biologics as novel treatment options that complement traditional antiviral drugs. These new therapies are designed to work synergistically with the immune system to prevent viral replication and reduce disease severity. For instance, monoclonal antibodies such as casirivimab and imdevimab have been used effectively to treat COVID-19, especially inhigh-risk patients. As the world grapples with new and emerging viral threats, the importance of antiviral drug development is more pronounced than ever. Research into novel antiviral agents is crucial for preparing for future viral outbreaks and tackling longstanding diseases. At the same time, global efforts must focus on ensuring that these treatments are accessible to populations worldwide, to mitigate thehealth and economicburden ofviral infections.
