Аннотация
The study of phraseology, which focuses on fixed expressions and idioms, has emerged as a crucial aspect of modern linguistics. This paper delves into the importance of phraseological units within contemporary linguistic research, scrutinizing their semantic and functional characteristics. By investigating various fixed expressions, including idioms, collocations, and proverbs, this research underscores phraseology's role in interpreting language dynamics and cultural subtleties. Additionally, the article addresses recent progress in phraseological studies and their potential impacts on language education and computational linguistics. Key words: phraseology, linguistics, idiomatic expressions, collocations, fixed expressions, contemporary language, semantic analysis, functional analysis. Phraseology, an essential branch of linguistics, centers on examining fixed expressions like idioms, collocations, and other multi-word combinations. Recently, this area has attracted considerable interest in contemporary linguistics because of its crucial role in comprehending language usage, semantic frameworks, and cultural contexts. This article seeks to explore the latest trends and advancements in phraseological research, emphasizing its significance in current linguistic studies and its practical applications in fields such as language education and computational linguistics. Phraseology investigates multi-word expressions that exhibit a degree of fixedness. According to Cowie1 (1998), these expressions, often idiomatic in nature, are essential for achieving fluency and naturalness in language use. However, some critics argue that the emphasis on fixed expressions overlooks the dynamic and creative aspects of language (Moon, 19982). Types of Phraseological Units Idioms: These are fixed expressions whose meanings cannot be inferred from the individual words (Wray, 20023). While idioms are crucial for understanding cultural nuances, their importance can be overstated, as they represent a small fraction of everyday language use. 1 Cowie, A. P. Cambridge University Press, 2002 39 INNOVATIVE RESEARCH IN SCIENCE International scientific-online conference Collocations: Collocations are pairs or groups of words that frequently co- occur (Fernando, 19964). While useful for language learners, some linguists argue that collocations are simply a byproduct of language usage patterns and do not require a separate field of study. Proverbs and Sayings: Traditional expressions conveying common wisdom or truths are valuable for cultural studies (Mel’čuk, 20125). However, their static nature may limit their relevance in the study of evolving linguistic patterns. Phrasal Verbs: These verb-particle combinations have meanings not directly inferable from their components (Granger & Meunier, 20086). While important, their study often overlaps with general syntactic research, calling into question the need for a distinct phraseological focus. Phraseological units are said to carry unique semantic properties and play specific functional roles in communication. Semantic analysis involves understanding the figurative meanings and cultural connotations of these expressions (Moon, 19987). Functional analysis examines how these units contribute to discourse coherence, emphasis, and stylistic variation. However, critics argue that such analyses are redundant, as similar insights can be gained through broader linguistic frameworks. Integrating phraseology into language teaching is argued to enhance learners' fluency and idiomatic competence (Wray, 20028). Strategies include explicit instruction on common idioms, collocations, and their usage contexts. Despite these benefits, some educators contend that focusing too heavily on phraseological units can detract from teaching more fundamental language skills. Advancements in computational linguistics have led to tools for the automatic identification and analysis of phraseological units. These include databases, corpus analysis software, and machine learning algorithms (Mel’čuk, 20129). While these tools represent significant progress, some argue that the complexity of phraseological units often leads to inaccuracies and oversimplifications in computational analysis. 4 Fernando, Chitra.
