Аннотация
This article explores the concept of "labor" through the discourse-cognitive approach, emphasizing the interplay between language, cognition, and socio-cultural factors in shaping its meaning. It discusses how cognitive structures like frames and conceptual metaphors influence the discourse surrounding labor in various contexts, including economic, social, and individual perspectives. Key words: Discourse-Cognitive Approach, Conceptual Metaphor, Frames and Schemas, Labor Discourse, Cognitive Linguistics, Socio-Cultural Context, Mental Models, Social Cognition, Labor as Commodity, Metaphorical Conceptualization of Labor, Economic Discourse, Conceptual Frames, Labor in Socio-Political Context, Work and Identity, Power Relations in Labor Discourse. The concept of "labor" holds a central place in social, economic, and political discourses, but its meaning is far from static. It is a dynamic, multifaceted notion shaped by cultural norms, historical contexts, and socio- political ideologies. Understanding how labor is perceived and communicated requires more than just a surface-level examination of economic systems; it demands an exploration of the cognitive processes and discursive practices that shape our understanding of work. The discourse-cognitive approach offers a comprehensive framework for this analysis by combining insights from cognitive linguistics and discourse analysis. This approach emphasizes the role of mental structures—such as conceptual metaphors, frames, and schemas—that influence how individuals and societies conceptualize labor. At the same time, it acknowledges how these mental models are informed by the broader socio-cultural context, including power relations, ideologies, and historical shifts. By examining labor through this lens, we can uncover how different societies and groups construct meanings around work, shaping attitudes towards labor practices, workers' rights, and even the value of human effort itself. This article aims to explore the concept of labor using the discourse- cognitive approach, focusing on how linguistic and cognitive mechanisms interact with cultural and social influences to form diverse conceptualizations of labor in various contexts. The introduction should define the discourse-cognitive approach and its relevance in understanding complex, abstract concepts such as "labor." Discuss 144 ACADEMIC RESEARCH IN MODERN SCIENCE International scientific-online conference how the approach integrates insights from cognitive linguistics (conceptual metaphors, mental spaces, frames) and discourse analysis (how social contexts shape the way labor is discussed). Example: Labor can be conceptualized differently across cultures, depending on economic systems, social hierarchies, or cultural attitudes toward work. 1. Conceptualizing Labor: Frames and Schemas This section will focus on how cognitive frames (mental structures that shape how we see the world) and schemas (cognitive templates based on past experiences) shape the perception of labor. The way labor is framed can significantly differ in discourse, from being a source of self-fulfillment to being seen as an economic necessity or even exploitation. Examples: The "labor is a commodity" frame versus the "labor as a human right" frame in political discourse. 2. Metaphorical Conceptualization of Labor: Cognitive metaphors play a crucial role in how we understand labor. Using conceptual metaphors theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980), explore how labor is often discussed metaphorically.[2] Common Metaphors: -Labor as a Journey: Referring to career paths, progression, or obstacles (e.g., “climbing the career ladder”). -Labor as a Struggle or Battle: Used in discourses on worker’s rights, economic inequality (e.g., "fighting for fair wages"). -Labor as a Resource: Labor is often discussed as something that can be bought, sold, or managed (e.g., "human capital"). 3. Discursive Practices and Labor: This section examines how labor is constructed in discourse, emphasizing socio-cultural contexts. Different discourses (e.g., neoliberal, socialist, or feminist) provide varied narratives about the value, nature, and purpose of labor. Examples: In capitalist discourse, labor is often viewed as a means to economic growth and productivity, while in socialist discourse, it may be conceptualized as a collective effort for societal well-being. 4. Socio-Cultural Influences on the Concept of Labor: This section highlights how cultural values, historical contexts, and social structures influence the way labor is conceptualized. The discourse surrounding labor in different societies may reflect underlying cultural values such as individualism, collectivism, or economic equality. Example: The cultural shift in 145 ACADEMIC RESEARCH IN MODERN SCIENCE International scientific-online conference Western societies from valuing manual labor in the early industrial era to emphasizing intellectual and technological work in the knowledge economy. 5.
