In today's interconnected world, it is crucial for future lawyers to communicate well across different languages and cultures. As the law becomes more globalized, law students need to not just understand legal concepts, but also have an ability to navigate to different legal systems that is to develop the discursive competence necessary to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds. Discursive competence plays a vital role in foreign language education, encompassing the ability to comprehend, produce, and interpret discourse within diverse communicative contexts. This literature review explores theoretical frameworks, pedagogical approaches, and empirical research related to the development and assessment of discursive competence in the teaching of foreign languages. The concept of discourse competence is derived from the theory of communicative competence, which includes various dimensions. Hymes (1972) proposed this view as a response to Chomsky's concept of competence as distinct from performance.[4] The scientist emphasized the importance of socio-cultural features in human communication and classified communicative competence into four subcategories: formal possibility, feasibility, appropriateness, and actual performance. Another scholars Canale and Swain further developed their own theoretical framework of communicative competence, which is categorised into three components: grammatical competence, sociolinguistic competence, and strategic competence. Canale (1983) expanded on the concept of communicative competence to include discourse competence, which he proposes as mastery of combining grammatical forms and meanings to achieve a unified spoken or written text in different genres. [2] This development is crucial when designing a syllabus centered on communication by means of spoken and written genres. Celce-Murcia, Dŏrnyei, and Thurell (1995) also incorporate the notion of discourse competence, along with linguistic, strategic, sociolinguistic, and actional competences. However, this model varies from those of Canale (1983) and Canale and Swain (1980), as it positions discourse competence as a central element in the model, stressing its value in language teaching and learning. Celce-Murcia (1995) proposed another model based on that of Celce-Murcia et al. (1995), which still incorporates discourse competence but includes language aspects such as formulaic language and paralinguistic features. If we take into account the role of discursive competence, it encompasses the ability to comprehend, produce, and interpret discourse within specific socio-cultural contexts. For law students, proficiency in foreign languages goes beyond mere linguistic competence; it enables them to communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, and legal practitioners from different linguistic backgrounds. By developing discursive competence, law students can convey legal concepts accurately, negotiate agreements persuasively, and advocate for their clients with confidence. Another key feature of it is that it facilitates intercultural understanding. In the multicultural landscape of the legal profession, intercultural competence is indispensable. By learning foreign languages, law students gain insights into the cultural nuances that shape legal systems and practices worldwide. Therefore, discursive competence allows students to engage critically with diverse perspectives, recognize cultural biases, and bridge communication gaps across linguistic divides. Through intercultural dialogue, law students cultivate empathy, respect, and appreciation for the cultural diversity inherent in the practice of law. Student who have developed discursive competence can navigate through global legal systems. In an era of globalization, legal professionals frequently encounter cross-border legal issues that require linguistic and cultural expertise. Law students with discursive competence are 403 better equipped to handle the complexities of international law, comparative legal analysis, and transnational legal practice. Proficiency in foreign languages helps students to take part in international legal internships, study abr
