Аннотация
The phenomenon of lexical borrowing is a significant aspect of language evolution, reflecting the cultural and societal interactions between communities. This study examines the borrowings of English sports terms in the Karakalpak language, focusing on the linguistic adaptations and semantic shifts that occur during the process. Through a comprehensive analysis of borrowed terms, their usage patterns, and socio-cultural contexts, this research sheds light on the dynamics of language contact and the influence of global sporting culture on minority languages such as Karakalpak. Data was collected from various sources including sports events, media, and interviews with native speakers. The findings reveal intriguing linguistic phenomena and contribute to our understanding of language contact and lexical innovation in multilingual environments. Keywords: Language contact, Borrowing, Sports terminology, Karakalpak language, Linguistic adaptation, Semantic shift, Phonological adaptation, Minority languages. Language contact and borrowing have been integral to the development and enrichment of languages throughout history. In contemporary societies, globalization and advancements in 337 communication technology have accelerated the exchange of linguistic elements across cultures. Sports, as a universal form of recreation and competition, serve as a conduit for such exchanges, leading to the adoption of sports-related terminology from dominant languages into minority languages. This study investigates the borrowings of English sports terms in the Karakalpak language, spoken by the Karakalpak people in Uzbekistan. [1.49] Methodology: Data for this study were collected through a combination of qualitative methods including participant observation, interviews with native speakers, and analysis of written and spoken texts from various sources such as sports events, broadcasts, and online platforms. The focus was on identifying English sports terms that have been integrated into the Karakalpak lexicon and examining the semantic and phonological adaptations they undergo in the process. Linguistic Analysis: The analysis reveals several interesting patterns in the borrowing of English sports terms into Karakalpak. Firstly, phonological adaptation often occurs to suit the phonetic structure of the Karakalpak language. For example, the English term "football" is adapted as "futbol" in Karakalpak, reflecting phonetic simplification and the absence of the "th" sound in the Karakalpak phonetic inventory. Semantic shifts also occur, wherein borrowed terms may acquire new meanings or associations in the recipient language. For instance, the English term "coach" in the context of sports, referring to a trainer or instructor, is borrowed into Karakalpak as "koç," but may also be used more broadly to refer to any leader or mentor, reflecting a semantic extension beyond its original sports-related domain. Additionally, some borrowed terms undergo morphological adaptation, wherein affixes or suffixes from the recipient language are added to the borrowed term. For example, the English term "team" is adapted as "komanda" in Karakalpak, incorporating the Karakalpak plural marker "-lar." Socio-Cultural Implications: The borrowing of English sports terms into Karakalpak reflects the influence of global sporting culture and the interconnectedness of diverse linguistic communities. It also highlights the adaptive capacity of minority languages to incorporate elements from dominant languages while retaining their distinct linguistic identity. Furthermore, the adoption of sports terminology facilitates communication and participation in international sporting events, contributing to the promotion and preservation of Karakalpak language and culture on a global stage. [2.147] The study of borrowings of English sports terms in the Karakalpak language provides valuable insights into the dynamics of language contact and linguistic adaptation in multicultural settings. By examining the phonological, semantic, and morphological aspects of borrowed terms, this research contributes to our understanding of the mechanisms underlying lexical innovation and cultural exchange. It also underscores the resilience and vitality of minority languages like Karakalpak in the face of globalization, reaffirming their significance in the rich tapestry of human linguistic diversity. Furthermore, investigating the socio-cultural attitudes towards the use of borrowed sports terms in Karakalpak society would provide valuable insights into language attitudes and identity dynamics. Understanding whether these borrowings are perceived as enriching or as threats to linguistic purity can inform language planning and revitalization efforts aimed at preserving and promoting the Karakalpak language in a rapidly changing linguistic landscape. 338 Practical Implications: The findings of this study have practical implications for language education and planning in Karakalpak-speaki
