The article deals with the importance and the usage of the terms “polydiscourse” and “interdiscourse” as well as the analysis of their key differences. Key words: polydiscourse, interdiscourse, discourse, context, multiplicity, ideology, cross-cultural communication In contemporary linguistic and discourse analysis, two terms— “polydiscourse” and “interdiscourse” —frequently appear, particularly in discussions of how communication, meaning, and knowledge are constructed in social, cultural, and institutional contexts. Although both concepts deal with the interaction of multiple discourses, they operate at different levels and emphasize distinct dynamics of meaning production and interaction. Understanding the nuances between polydiscourse and interdiscourse is critical for any scholar exploring discourse theory, semiotics, or communication studies. Before delving into polydiscourse and interdiscourse, it is essential to define “discourse” itself. Discourse refers to more than just language; it encompasses structured systems of communication that carry meaning within specific social, cultural, or ideological contexts. Michel Foucault and other key figures in discourse theory argue that discourse is a means by which power relations, ideologies, and societal norms are enacted, negotiated, and perpetuated. Discourse shapes not only how people communicate but also how they think about and understand the world. It reflects both the content (what is said) and the contextualized practices that govern its use (how, why, and by whom it is said). What is Polydiscourse? “Polydiscourse” refers to the co-existence and interaction of multiple discourses within a single communicative or social space. It highlights the heterogeneity of discursive elements operating simultaneously in a complex system, where different voices, ideologies, or genres intersect. The concept emphasizes multiplicity and variety, suggesting that various discourses—potentially conflicting or complementary—are present in communication. Polydiscourse becomes especially relevant in diverse, multi- layered environments such as globalized media, where political, social, cultural, 122 ACADEMIC RESEARCH IN MODERN SCIENCE International scientific-online conference and personal discourses co-occur. For instance, consider a television debate on climate change where scientific, political, economic, and environmentalist discourses may all be represented. Each of these discourses brings its own structure of meaning, values, and assumptions, which interact with one another in complex ways. Polydiscourse recognizes this layering without necessarily focusing on how these discourses negotiate meaning together. Key Characteristics of Polydiscourse: - Multiplicity: Multiple discourses are present simultaneously, often without being in direct conversation with each other. - Co-existence: Polydiscourse can include conflicting or divergent perspectives, highlighting the diversity of voices within a single discursive space. - Complexity: It points to the complexity and richness of the communicative environment, acknowledging that meaning-making is not dominated by a single, unified discourse. What is Interdiscourse? “Interdiscourse”, on the other hand, refers to the interaction between distinct discourses, focusing specifically on how they engage, overlap, and shape each other. Where polydiscourse emphasizes co- existence, interdiscourse focuses on the “relational dynamics” between discourses—how one discourse influences, responds to, or incorporates elements from another. It involves the crossing of boundaries between discursive fields, creating a space of hybridization, negotiation, and mutual influence. Interdiscourse plays a vital role in areas such as intercultural communication, where discourses from different cultural or ideological backgrounds intersect. This interaction often leads to the transformation of the involved discourses, as they adapt, resist, or integrate elements from one another. For example, the interaction between scientific discourse and public policy discourse on topics like public health reflects an interdiscursive relationship, where the language, concepts, and values of one field shape how another interprets and acts on an issue. Key Characteristics of Interdiscourse: - Interaction: Interdiscourse focuses on how discourses engage with one another, influencing and shaping each other's boundaries and meanings. - Negotiation: It emphasizes the dynamic process of meaning negotiation, where discourses adapt to one another or transform in response to contact with external discourses. 123 ACADEMIC RESEARCH IN MODERN SCIENCE International scientific-online conference - Boundary-crossing: Interdiscourse often involves the blending or overlapping of discursive fields, resulting in hybrid forms of discourse that combine elements from different sources.
