Аннотация
This article offers a comprehensive treatment of field-specific terminology in linguistics, with particular attention to interior-design terms. It explains the role of the linguistic study of specialized vocabulary and terms in the development of professional practice. Proceeding from an anthropocentric perspective, it analyzes not only the structural-semantic features of terminology, but also how terms reflect professional cognition and thought and express the distinctive features of the national mentality. Key words: special lexicon, terminology, term, interior designer, heterogeneous. The emergence of specialized vocabulary is intrinsically linked to the development of knowledge. Indeed, “the progress of science inevitably comes with the appearance of special words used to designate the objects under study” [7; p. 7]. As Grinev-Grinevich notes, specialized vocabulary clearly demonstrates the connection between language development and the history of a people’s material and spiritual culture [3; p. 6]. Historical sources indicate that specialized vocabularies have been used since antiquity across different cultures and stages of civilization: first among hunters, gatherers, and herders, and later among artisans, musicians, artists, orators, and warriors. Hence, specialized vocabulary is closely tied to specific domains of human professional activity. Thus, specialized vocabulary is a distinct language system that differs markedly from the general literary lexicon in its properties and functions. According to researchers, the terminological lexicon is only “externally” subject to the “laws of language” of the tongue in which it is formed and used. The specialized lexicon comprises terms and professionalisms (professional jargon). A term is a word or phrase denoting a specific concept in a field of knowledge or practice, while professionalisms are lexical items used by members of a particular occupation. Our study centers on terms and terminology; accordingly, the article examines in detail the properties of interior-design terms. To begin with, in linguistics, the study of terms related to the field of “interior design” appears in the scholarly works of a number of foreign and local researchers—Alexander (1977), Jencks (1978), Zevi (1978), A. S. Grinev (2004), A. Z. Abduraxmanova (2016), L. N. Cherkasova (1998), N. A. Minakova (1985), M. M. Bekmurodov (2002), Z. U. Xakiyeva (2013), I. A. Klepalchenko (1999), K. Sapayev (1985), and N. Sh. Saloydinova (2023)—devoted to architectural and construction terminology. These works describe the genesis, formation, and structure of architectural and construction terminology. They also emphasize its international character, since in most Western European languages this terminology developed on the basis of vocabulary derived from Greek and Latin. A.S. Grinev’s work Comparative Analysis of English and Russian Architectural Terminology [2] is devoted to a comparative formal-structural analysis of architectural terminology, whereas M.A. Simonenko’s The Architectural Metaphor in Language and Speech [6] examines the functional properties of the architectural metaphor. D.Z. Gaynutdinova’s study The Term-Metaphor of the Architectural and Construction Substyle: Systemic-Structural and Cognitive-Discursive Approaches Vol. 5, No. 11 – Special Issue (EJAR) 147 ISSN: 2181-2020 LPTIENP International Scientific-Practice Conference on “Linguistics and Pedagogical Technologies: International Experience and National Practice” Denau, November 20, 2025 in-academy.uz/index.php/ejar [1] focuses on the systemic-structural and cognitive characteristics of architectural and construction term-metaphors. Subsequently, works devoted to the study of design terminology also began to appear. In particular, the lexico-semantic and word-formation features of Russian-language design terminology are analyzed in N. L. Tukhareli’s dissertation Design Terminology in the Lexical System of the Russian Language [8]. A. S. Dzhumagalieva, in her dissertation Linguosemiotics of Landscape Design Discourse (based on English) [4], examines the use of verbal and nonverbal signs in English- language landscape design discourse. During the Renaissance, the term disegno (Italian) was used by painters, architects, and sculptors in their creative practice—for planning, designing, and creating works of art. At that time, theorists in other fields of knowledge had not yet defined design as a distinct scientific discipline. Design began to emerge as a separate profession later, as a result of the division of labor [10, pp. 69– 71]. The study of terminology in the field of interior design involves examining a system of specialized architectural and design texts and lexicographic materials that convey essential information about the relevant scientific and professional activity in interior design. In explanatory dictionaries, the words “design” and “interior” appeared relatively recently. According to N. M. Shansky’s etymolo
