Roughly a third of the essays contained in this volume originated as papers delivered at two sessions (“Studies in Medieval Military History in Honor of Bernard S. Bachrach I-II”) at the International Congress on Medieval Studies at Western Michigan University in May 2013. Discussion of the papers, as well as of Professor Bachrach’s career and contributions, continued at a third session, “Bernard S.
