Аннотация

The article examines the process of developing expressive means in beginner pianists within an academic piano class. It focuses on artistic techniques such as dynamics, articulation, agogics, timbre variety, and phrasing, and describes a gradual, step-by-step approach to their assimilation. Special attention is given to innovative teaching methods, the role of creativity in performance, and the integration of technical and artistic skills from the early stages of learning. Practical recommendations for piano teachers are provided. Keywords: piano pedagogy, expressive means, artistic techniques, beginner pianists, performance skills, step-by-step learning. In the early stages of piano education, technical mastery and artistic expression should develop simultaneously. While technique provides the necessary tools for accurate execution, expressive means transform a sequence of notes into meaningful and emotionally engaging music. Beginner pianists often focus primarily on correct notes and rhythm, but neglect the nuances that bring a piece to life. For this reason, structured and gradual development of artistic techniques is essential in academic piano teaching. Expressive means in piano performance refer to the interpretative tools and devices that allow the performer to convey emotions, imagery, and personal vision of the music. These include:  Dynamic techniques — changes in loudness (forte, piano, crescendo, diminuendo);  Agogic techniques — temporal flexibility (ritardando, accelerando, rubato);  Articulation techniques — ways of connecting or separating notes (legato, staccato, non-legato);  Timbre variety — color changes achieved through register shifts, pedaling, and touch variation;  Phrasing and nuance — shaping musical sentences through pauses, accents, and intonation. For young learners, expressive techniques are not innate — they must be introduced in a pedagogically justified order, supported by imagery, imitation, and active listening. This gradual development fosters: emotional responsiveness to music; creative thinking; individual interpretation skills; increased motivation to practice. Step-by-Step Mastery of Artistic Techniques: Step 1: Foundation of Sound Control. Beginners start with basic dynamic contrasts, learning to produce soft and loud sounds without tension. Exercises 130 ACADEMIC RESEARCH IN MODERN SCIENCE International scientific-online conference include: short, contrasting phrases in forte and piano; echo imitation games with the teacher. Step 2: Introduction to Articulation. Once basic finger control is established, simple articulation contrasts (legato vs. staccato) are introduced. Short patterns and well-known melodies are used to highlight differences. Step 3: Exploration of Agogics. Students experiment with slight tempo changes, learning the emotional effect of ritardando and accelerando. At this stage, the focus is on natural breathing and phrasing. Step 4: Timbre and Pedal Use. The teacher introduces basic pedal techniques and register shifts, linking them to imagery (e.g., “deep bass like distant thunder”). Step 5: Nuance Integration. Students combine dynamics, articulation, agogics, and timbre into short musical pieces, gradually learning to make artistic choices. Table 1.
