Аннотация
Formative assessment plays a crucial role in enhancing language learning in English as a Second Language (ESL) classrooms, especially within vocational education settings such as polytechnic institutions. This article explores various formative assessment techniques that ESL teachers can employ to monitor student progress, provide timely feedback, and promote active learner engagement. Techniques discussed include exit tickets, peer and self-assessment, quick quizzes, role-plays, and reflective journals. These methods support a learner-centered approach, fostering motivation, autonomy, andimproved communicative competence. In today’s educational landscape, the focus has shifted from traditional teacher-centered instruction toward more student-centered and process-oriented approaches. One of the key components of this modern paradigm is formative assessment, which is particularly important in English as a Second Language (ESL) classrooms. In such environments, students are not only learning a new language but are also navigating a variety of linguistic, cultural, and cognitive challenges. Formative assessment provides teachers with the tools to understand how studentsare progressing inreal-timeandto adjust instructionaccordingly tomeet diverseneeds. In the context of vocational education, especially in polytechnic institutions, the importance of effective ESL teaching is amplified. Students at these institutions are preparing for specific careers that often require a solid foundation in English—whether it be for reading technical manuals, writing reports, participating in interviews, or communicating in international work settings. Therefore, it is crucial that their language learning is both practical and responsive to their ongoing development. Formative assessment techniques support this aim by offering continuous feedback and promoting reflective learning, thus ensuring that language instructionaligns with both academicandprofessional goals. Furthermore, formative assessment is not just a tool for measuring progress; it is an instructional strategy that fosters motivation, confidence, and autonomy among learners. Whenstudents are aware of their strengths and areas that need improvement, they become more engaged in the learning process and take greater responsibility for their outcomes. In ESL settings, where students often come with varying levels of language proficiency, this type of individualizedsupport is essential forachieving equitablelearning outcomes. Exit Tickets. One of the simplest yet most effective formative assessment techniques is the use of exit tickets. At the end of a lesson, students are asked to write a short response to a prompt such as: “What did you learn today?”, “What is still unclear?”, or “Give one example of a new word you learned.” This method provides teachers with immediate feedback on students' understanding of the day’s topic. In vocational ESL classes, prompts can be related to specific professional terminology, enabling both language and subject integration. For instance, after a lesson on workplace safety, students can write one safety-related term and its definition in English. 715 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCHERS ISSN:3030-332X Impact factor: 8,293 Volume 11,issue2,May 2025 https://wordlyknowledge.uz/index.php/IJSR worldly knowledge Index: googlescholar, research gate, research bib, zenodo, open aire. https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=ru&as_sdt=0%2C5&q=wosjournals.com&btnG https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Worldly-Knowledge https://journalseeker.researchbib.com/view/issn/3030-332X Quick quizzes and polls. Short quizzes conducted during or after class are useful to quickly gauge student comprehension. These can be multiple-choice, true/false, or short-answer formats. Digital tools such as Kahoot, Quizizz, or Google Forms can increase student engagement. In a polytechnic ESL classroom, quizzes can be tailored to include vocabulary or grammar related to technical subjects such as mechanics, electronics, or architecture. These low-stakes assessments reduce anxietyand promoteahabit offrequent review. Think-pair-share. This collaborative learning technique helps students build confidence in speaking. First, students think individually about a question posed by the teacher. Then, they discuss their ideas with a partner, and finally share with the class. For example, in a lesson on job interviews, students can answer: “What are three things you should say in a job interview?” This not only improves language fluency but also prepares them for real-world communication. Teachers can walk around and listen during the pair discussions to assess participation andunderstanding. Peer assessment. Allowing students to assess each other’s work promotes responsibility a
