Elections are the process of participation of citizens in the election of their representatives to state or local authorities and political decision-making. Through elections, citizens freely express their will and are the primary means of expressing the legitimacy of power in democratic systems. Fair elections serve as the main technology for legitimizing political power, since they are based on free and equal participation of the people.
