This article considers the issue of categorization of language units from the point of view of modern linguistic research. The study analyzed the principles of classification of language units, their hierarchical structure and functional characteristics. The paper mukayasa categorization approaches in the areas of structural, functional and cognitive linguistics. The results show the interaction of semantic, syntactic and pragmatic criteria in the categorization of language units.
