Аннотация
This thesis offers an in-depth comparative linguistic study of women’s cosmetic terminology in English and Uzbek, emphasizing the linguistic mechanisms of term formation, borrowing, adaptation, translation, and semantic transformation. In the contemporary era of globalization and media influence, the beauty and cosmetics industry has emerged as a powerful socio-economic and cultural force. The English language, being the dominant language in global commerce and popular culture, has become the principal source of new terminologies in this domain. This linguistic dominance has led to the widespread integration of English cosmetic terms into various other languages, including Uzbek, where the phenomenon of borrowing has accelerated rapidly in recent decades. Keywords: cosmetic terminology, lexical borrowing, Uzbek language, English influence, semantic adaptation, translation studies, sociolinguistics, terminology standardization, beauty discourse, globalization and language. The core objective of this study is to investigate how cosmetic-related terms such as foundation, primer, concealer, highlighter, setting spray, mascara, eyeliner, and blush are transferred, translated, and used in the Uzbek linguistic landscape. The thesis identifies that these borrowings typically occur via three main channels: direct borrowing from English, borrowing through Russian (a historically influential language in Uzbekistan), and calque formation or descriptive translation within the Uzbek language system. The study reveals that in many cases, Uzbek equivalents are either lacking, inconsistent, or semantically inadequate to fully reflect the original meaning and function of the English terms. Furthermore, the thesis explores the sociolinguistic factors that influence the acceptance and integration of English cosmetic terms into Uzbek. These include cultural prestige associated with English, the marketing strategies of global beauty brands, the increasing consumption of English- dominated digital content (such as YouTube beauty tutorials and Instagram influencers), and the desire for modernity and global identity among younger Uzbek speakers. As a result, many English terms are retained in their original form within Uzbek speech and writing, leading to the 34 Iyun, 2025-Yil hybridization of language and style, particularly in youth discourse, advertising, and online communication. Linguistically, the study applies a descriptive-analytical methodology and draws on multiple sources, including bilingual glossaries, cosmetic product labels, beauty-related advertisements, social media discourse, and user-generated content. Semantic fields are analyzed to show how English terms carry not only literal meanings but also connotative and emotional associations such as elegance, professionalism, sophistication, or modern femininity. The analysis highlights that direct translations often fail to preserve these semantic nuances. For example, the term highlighter is sometimes translated as “yorituvchi vosita” in Uzbek, which is vague and does not fully capture the specific cosmetic function or aesthetic intent of the original English term. The research also addresses the issue of morphological adaptation of borrowed terms in Uzbek. While some words are partially integrated and undergo phonological or morphological adjustment (e.g., tonal krem from “tonal cream”), many others remain unchanged, causing syntactic and stylistic disharmony within the Uzbek linguistic framework. Moreover, the thesis examines the role of language standardization and the need for terminological regulation in Uzbek. At present, there is no unified or officially sanctioned dictionary of Uzbek cosmetic terms, which leads to ambiguity, miscommunication, and pedagogical challenges in beauty education and public discourse. The findings of this research suggest the urgent necessity for developing standardized, culturally sensitive, and semantically accurate Uzbek equivalents of commonly used cosmetic terms. This process requires collaboration between linguists, translators, marketers, and educators. Beyond mere translation, it involves deep consideration of cultural context, aesthetic values, consumer perception, and linguistic norms. The thesis proposes the creation of a bilingual terminological database and the incorporation of beauty-related terminology into national language policy and educational curricula, especially for vocational training in cosmetology and media communication. In conclusion, this study contributes to the broader understanding of lexical borrowing, domain-specific language development, and the dynamic relationship between language, culture, and identity. By focusing on women’s cosmetic terminology—a field often overlooked in traditional linguistic research—it sheds light on how language evolves under the influence of globalization, commerce, and gendered social practices. The comparative perspective between English and Uzbek highlights not only ling
